Over 80 per cent of uk building mortar comes from factory-produced sources
Over 80 per cent of mortar used in the UK building and construction industries now comes from factory-produced sources, says the Mortar Industry Association (MIA).
Using government and its own statistics, the Association estimates that 82.7 per cent of the 590,000 tonnes of mortar used in the UK in the first quarter of 2014 was manufactured under factory conditions.
Chairman of the MIA marketing group, David Stewart, said:
‘This reflects the insistence by specifiers and contractors for quality products throughout the building chain. Factory-produced mortars provide accurate cement content, consistent strength, mix proportions and colour. They certainly contribute to cost effectiveness by reducing mixing and labour costs and minimising wastage and pilferage. ‘
The MIA represents producers of factory-produced mortars, renders and screeds in the UK and provides a wide range of information on the design, production and use of the industry’s products.
