Hanson on line at Media City
Hanson UK is supplying factory-produced mortar to phase one of the Media City development in Salford, Manchester. Bovis Lend Lease has been appointed management contractor for this £350 million development alongside the Manchester Ship
Canal.
The first phase of Media City will cover almost 40 acres, with the full development
covering up to 200 acres. Hanson UK is working closely on the project with brick laying sub-contractor Irvine Whitlock. It has supplied five 22 m3 silos to the contract where it is providing a natural coloured, class III mortar, using a red sand. In the first ten months of the contract, Hanson
had supplied 800 metres of mortar. Phase 1 of the Media City development comprises 500,035 sq ft of office buildings, 224,400 sq ft of broadcast studios, 40,000 sq ft of post production facilities, a 206 bed 3-star hotel and 371 apartments. Completion is due in 2011.
With the environment high on the political and public agenda, Peel Holdings and the
Media City UK partnership has ensured that the development integrates environmental management and sustainability measures throughout its planning, design and construction.
The BBC’s buildings will be built to meet BREAMM’s ‘excellent’ rating for sustainability.
Throughout the construction stage, a site-specific environmental management plan will
be implemented to minimise the use of resources and prevent pollution – all of which
are independently audited by the Considerate Constructors Scheme.
